The Tablet Coating Process at a Glance

There are two common tablet coating methods: sugar coating and film coating.

Sugar Coating

Tablets tumble in the pan while getting coated with several syrup-based layers until the surface turns smooth and shiny. The downside is that this method is typically slow and labor-intensive.

Film Coating

A spray gun applies a thin coating solution onto the tablet surface. At the same time, hot air dries it quickly to form a clear protective film. Compared with sugar coating, film coating is faster and usually more cost-effective.
