Bottle Unscrambler Guide

When there are many bottles to handle, they always require a bottle unscrambler. It can orient and feed bottles onto a conveyor in the correct position. Then the product flow is maintained continuously and efficiently. This article helps you have a comprehensive understanding of bottle unscramblers.

What Are Bottle Unscrambling Machines?

Bottle Unscrambling Machines

A bottle unscrambler is a sorting machine that puts bottles in the correct position for processing. In many factories, empty bottles are delivered in large bags, cartons, or containers. The bottles are mixed together and face different directions. A bottle unscrambler separates the bottles with vibration, turns them into the correct position, and sends them for further processing. Then, bottles smoothly enter filling, capping, labeling, or packaging equipment in a steady flow for further handling. The whole production line greatly improves efficiency.

Advantages of Bottle Unscramblers

  • Higher production efficiency. A bottle unscrambler can automatically sort and orient bottles without manual handling. Bottles move continuously to the next machine. This increases production speed.
  • Stable bottle supply. It provides a steady flow of correctly positioned bottles. This makes filling, capping, and labeling machines work more smoothly.
  • Suitable for different bottle types. Many bottle unscramblers can handle various bottle sizes and shapes. Some models can be adjusted quickly when changing products.
  • Low risk of bottle damage. Manual handling may cause bottles to fall, become scratched, or get deformed. A bottle unscrambler sorts bottles more gently to reduce damage.
  • Reduced labor costs. The machine replaces manual bottle sorting. Fewer workers are needed to feed bottles into the production line.

Applications

Bottle unscramblers are used in many areas. Here are some uses.

  • Pharmaceutical industry. Common bottle types include tablet bottles, capsule bottles, syrup bottles, and supplement bottles.
  • Food area. Food manufacturers use bottle unscramblers to handle bottles for sauces, cooking oils, seasonings, honey, and other liquid or semi-liquid products.
  • Beverage production. Bottle unscramblers are often installed before filling machines in beverage plants. They are used for water bottles, juice bottles, tea bottles, and sports drink bottles.
  • Cosmetic industry. Cosmetic products often use bottles with different shapes and sizes. Bottle unscramblers can feed containers for products such as shampoo, lotion, facial cleanser, toner, and body wash.

How Does a Bottle Unscrambler Work?

The working process may vary slightly between different machine designs. But most bottle unscramblers follow these basic steps. You can check the video to see the working process.

Step 1: Bottle Loading

Bottles are first poured into the hopper. The hopper stores a bulk supply of bottles and feeds them gradually to the unscrambling mechanism.

Step 2: Bottle Feeding

Vibrating parts move bottles from the hopper into the barrel. Vibration helps to separate overlapping bottles and spread them evenly before they enter the mold disc.

Step 3: Mold Disc Orientation

The mold disc picks up bottles and begins to orient them. This part is a rotating plate with bottle-shaped cavities. Bottles are then entered into the mold disc in random positions.

Step 4: Scraper Knife Adjustment

A scraper knife ensures that only correctly positioned bottles pass through. If bottles are inverted or misaligned, the scraper knife guides them back into the hopper for reprocessing.

Step 5:  Bottle Separation

After proper orientation, bottles go through bottle separating parts. They arrange the bottles in a single row for smooth transfer to the output conveyor.

Step 6:  Output

Correctly oriented bottles are moved onto the conveyor belt. They are sent to the next stage for processing, like filling and capping.

What Are the Main Parts of a Bottle Unscrambler?

Though bottle unscrambling machines have many models, some parts are common.

Hopper

Bottle Unscrambler Hopper

The hopper is a large container where bottles are first loaded into the machine. It stores bulk bottles and feeds them down for processing. The part is located at the top or upper side of the unscrambler, so bottles can fall naturally into the vibrating system below. Its size and shape can be customized according to bottle dimensions and production needs.

Vibrating Parts

The vibrating parts are mechanical units that move bottles forward from the hopper into the barrel. This vibration separates tangled or overlapping bottles. It prevents jams and ensures even bottle distribution. These parts are positioned directly under the hopper, connecting it to the barrel. The vibration strength and speed can be adjusted. The design can be made for different bottle materials to improve feeding efficiency.

Barrel

Bottle Unscrambler Barrel

The barrel is a round container that receives bottles from the vibrating parts. In this area, bottles move towards the mold disc. Its circular structure guides bottles to the next processing stage. The barrel is located in the central section of the machine. In some cases, its size and internal layout can be changed to handle specific bottle types or to increase throughput capacity.

Mold Disc

Bottle Unscrambler Mold Disc

This is a rotating plate with cavities shaped to match the bottles. Bottles drop into these cavities. They are oriented as required when the disc rotates. In this part, incorrect positions, such as bottle mouths pointing downwards, are corrected through interaction with the scraper knife. The mold disc is located inside the barrel area and connected to the rotating drive parts. For different bottle specifications, the mold disc supports customization to match the exact size and shape of the bottles.

Rotating Parts

The rotating parts refer to the mechanical and motor-driven components. They are responsible for turning the mold disc and other moving parts. They provide the motion for sorting and aligning bottles. These parts are usually located beneath or beside the mold disc, connected via shafts and gears. The rotation speed can be adjusted according to production requirements. Moreover, some drive components support customization to handle much heavier or lighter bottles.

Bottle Separating Parts

These parts are the final section of the unscrambler. They guide bottles into a single line to exit the machine. This prevents bottlenecks and makes it easier for the filling or capping machines to work smoothly. These parts are located at the output end of the machine. They can be changed for different line speeds or special bottle shapes to maintain efficient flow.

Protection Frame

Bottle Unscrambler Protection Frame

The machine frame is the backbone of the bottle unscrambler. It holds the hopper, barrel, mold disc, rotating parts, and separating parts in place. Made of stainless steel, it provides good strength, stability, and hygienic surfaces that meet GMP standards. The frame supports all main components. Customization of frame sizes and layout is possible to fit different factory production lines or factories.

How to Choose a Suitable Bottle Unscrambler?

When buying a bottle unscrambling machine, the following factors need to be considered.

Bottle Size and Shape

Bottle size and shape directly influence machine performance. A bottle unscrambler always has a bottle range for handling. Take the Anxine CLP-650, for example. It is suitable for round bottles, square bottles, flat square bottles, and irregularly shaped bottles. But the bottle diameter should be from 20mm to 80mm. If the bottle is too tall or too short, the machine may not orient it correctly. This can cause jams or reduce production efficiency. Therefore, you should confirm that the specifications of the equipment you want match the bottle sizes. If not, you can ask whether the machine can be customized to meet your needs.

Production Speed

Production speed determines the capacity you need. A machine with insufficient output can become a problem in the production line. The filling machine may stop and wait for bottles, which greatly reduces efficiency. A machine with excessive capacity usually costs more. The ideal choice should match your production target.

For example, the Anxine CBL-Z model could achieve 30-45 bottles/min. So it is ideal for small factories or start-up businesses. In comparison, the max output of the PBL-160 model is up to 120 bottles/min. It is more suitable for high-speed or large-scale production lines.

Quick Changeover

Many manufacturers use more than one bottle size. Then, changeover time becomes important. A machine with simple adjustments allows operators to switch to another bottle quickly. It reduces production downtime much less. Frequent product changes may cause significant time loss if machine adjustment is complicated.

Factory Space

The machine must fit the available installation area. Some high-speed bottle unscramblers require a larger footprint. Limited space can create installation difficulties and restrict maintenance access. Proper space around the machine also helps technicians perform routine inspection and repair work. For example, the CED-160 model features the dimensions of 2,200 x 1,050 x 1,900 mm. It suits a medium or large factory for good operation. The CLP-650 model with 826 x 1,034 x 1,172 mm, is much better for small factories.

Smooth Integration

Most bottle unscramblers need to be connected with other equipment to complete the production line. So, easy integration is important. Poor matching can lead to bottle accumulation or production interruptions. Before purchasing, you’d better check whether the bottle unscrambler can match the speed of the downstream equipment. For example, if the filling machine processes 120 bottles per minute, the bottle unscrambler should provide a similar output.

It is also important to confirm the conveyor height and bottle discharge direction. Large differences may require additional modifications during installation. For fully automatic production lines, you can ask whether the machine supports PLC communication and signal exchange. This makes the whole production easier.

How to Troubleshoot the Common Issues?

You may meet some problems during production, and some of them could be solved by yourself.

Fault Cause Solution
The mold disc is stuck. There are too many

bottles in the hopper.

Reduce the vibrating speed.
The adjustment of the bottle outlet is improper. Adjust the height of the scraper knife.
The pressure of the friction disc is too small. Adjust the spring cap of the driving parts to increase the pressure of the friction disc.
The bottle mouth is

downward after bottles are unscrambled.

The guide strip is
