Load Capacity

A ribbon blender's optimal load is between 40% and 65% of its total volume. You can use this range to calculate how much material to process in each batch.

Material Bulk Density

For regular dry powders or granules, a standard motor is sufficient. But if you are mixing denser materials, you'll need a more powerful motor to ensure stable operation.

Drive System

We recommend using a direct-drive gear motor. It delivers better performance than a belt or chain drive system. Also, it requires lower maintenance and reduces noise.

How It Works: Convective and Diffusive Mixing

A ribbon blender relies on a continuous, multi-directional convective mixing action, rather than simple gravity tumbling.

  • The central shaft drives the inner and outer helical ribbon agitators to rotate in the horizontal U-shaped trough.
  • During rotation, the outer ribbons pull materials from both ends of the trough toward the center. And the inner ribbons push materials back toward the ends.
  • It creates a back-and-forth folding motion. The intersecting flow paths reduce dead zones and generate moderate convective shear. This way, a homogeneous blend is achieved in a short cycle time.

It is usually used for efficient blending of dry, free-flowing materials. The equipment can also mix small amounts of liquid into solids. Equipped with a powerful motor or optional extrusion screw, the blender can handle denser materials or thicker pastes.
A standard ribbon mixer typically completes most dry powder batches within 10 to 15 minutes. Actual mixing time may vary depending on your material’s bulk density and batch size.
The optimal range is 40% to 65% of the total capacity. Do not load below 30% or above 90%. The ribbons need enough material and space to push and move the materials.
Ribbon blenders use helical ribbons to deliver faster, convective mixing of dry powders. Paddle blenders use gentle tumbling with paddles. They are more suitable for heavy doughs and sticky materials.
